Miscanthus

These ornamental Grasses are natives of Japan and China. The variegated kinds make lovely potted plants in 5- or 6-inch pots. M. sinensis Zebrinus (Zebra Grass) forms tufts of long, arching, linear leaves. They are bluish green with yellow or creamy-white horizontal bands. In early fall, fan-shaped heads of tiny, white flowers are borne. This plant grows up to 4 feet high. M. sinensis Gracillimus has long, thin, arching leaves that are bluish-green with a white midrib, usually tinged with bronze. The tiny, hairy white flowers are borne in fan-shaped heads, in early fall. This variety also grows up to 4 feet high.

Pot Cultivation

Grow these Grasses in ordinary, well-drained soil in full sun. It would be beneficial if leaf mold or compost is added. Cut the dead stalks down in the spring and top dress with decayed manure or rich compost. When they are grown in pots, water freely throughout the summer and only when the soil becomes dry in the winter.

Propagation

They may be divided in the spring.
